Creating Your Own Media

Recently, I send a message encouraging a group of people interested in the Skyland development (SE Washington, DC) eminent domain issue to create their own media. I referenced one blog site - Blogger.com - for resources. Since then I've discovered others and some email listservs as well:

Weblogs

Blog technology enables one to distibute written and visual (photos, etc) material over the Internet. However, many people have expressed interest in the use of audio and video tools over the Internet to communicate their information. We are exploring those technologies and will share our findings with you soon. In the meantime, read a recent article in the Washington Post about podcasting entitled "Mainstream Media Is Tuning In to 'Podcasting".

Xanga is a community of online diaries and journals. You can easily start your own free journal, share thoughts with your friends and meet new friends, too!

LiveJournal is a simple-to-use (but extremely powerful and customizable) personal publishing ("blogging") tool, built on open source software.

Blogger.com provides tools for people to have their own voice on the web and organizing the world's information from the personal perspective.

WordPress is a state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. What a mouthful. WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.

MSN Spaces - With your own Space, you can now easily build your own personal Web log (blog) to share your photos, thoughts and experiences with whoever you choose

TypePad - You can publish anything instantly. Be the sole author, or share a weblog with friends, family, or colleagues. Post your vacation photos, comment on the news, keep a private journal. How you use TypePad is up to you.

Once you've created your blog, send us your weblog information and we will link it to the East of the River Online site

Email lists - Listservs
An Email List or Listserv is one of the most utilized methods of group communications on the Internet. They are relatively easy to set up and can be useful for discussion issues of importance to members of the list.

Yahoo Groups - Start a group for your friends, family, club, or other organization. Create a group to find others who share your own particular interest.

FreeLists - A service providing free, commercial-grade Internet mailing lists to all interested. Our lists are all internet and technology-related. Thus, we provide a free focal point for technology-inclined individuals and groups on the Internet.

Google Groups is a free service which helps groups of people communicate effectively using email and the Web. Every group has a home page hosted by Google where members can start new discussions or reply to older topics. Every group also has its own email address to help its members stay in touch with each other.

MSN Groups - Free interest-group site hosting from Microsoft Network. Offers many features; customizable by the group website owner

Once you've created your listserv, send us your Listserv information and we will link it to the East of the River Online site.

Why Nsagi's List

Several years ago, I created a feature on my Interchange site entitled Nsagi's List. I would spend most of the week reviewing emails sent to me about interesting resources and events accessable via the web that might interest my web constituency of "mostly" black folk. Go to Google and search "Nsagi's List" and you'll find some of those early postings.

I would spend hours upon hours researching for material, cutting and pasting the results into informative snippets that others found useful. Well, we've moved a long way from the "cutting and pasting" days and now have things called blogs and other useful technology to share our thoughts and ideas with the world.

The purpose of this incarnation of "Nsagi's List" is to share my thoughs on various issues and to encourage you to use this technology called "New Media" to let the rest of us know what you're thinking, initiatives you're involved in, things you're making & selling, etc. So join me as I travel along these new paths.

peace,

vernard
